Ovulation symbols

I have been trying to get my head around ovulation tests. Three days ago I started testing and got two days of blank circles. Yesterday morning I got a flashing smiley, but this morning it has went back to a blank circle. I took another test a few hours later and it is still a blank circle?

Could I have missed my surge last night?
