Ovulation test got smiley first. After a few hours it was empty

Hi. I bought yesterday a clear blue ovulation test. I tried it in the afternoon on the 9th day of my cycle. The first try I got solid smily. I also tried it in the evening a few hours later and it was empty. I wonder how is it possible? Did I get the first time false smiley? Or the holder doesn’t work anymore once it shows a smiley?
