Peak the day before my period

I started taking the ovulation test when instructed by the leaflet - day 11 of my cycle. I got negative results for 12 days up until day 23 of my cycle. Then i had 4 days of  high fertility, 1 day of peak fertility, and the day after peak I started my period. Why would thr test show peak the day before my period?
